Channels

Google Chat

Create your own Google Chat app in Google Workspace and connect it to ClickFix; direct messages and the rooms you pick land in the inbox.

The Google Chat channel is specific to your organization: you create a Google Chat app and a service account in your own Google Cloud project, then give ClickFix the service account key and the project number.

Google Chat apps only work with Google Workspace accounts; a personal Gmail account can't publish a Chat app. Your Workspace admin or a user with access to the project should do the steps below.

1. Google Cloud project

  1. In console.cloud.google.com create a project or pick an existing one. It must belong to your Workspace organization.
  2. Note the Project number on the project dashboard (digits only, e.g. 123456789012). This is not the project ID (my-project-id).

2. Enable the Google Chat API

APIs & Services → Library → Google Chat API → Enable.

3. Service account and key

  1. Create a service account under IAM & Admin → Service Accounts → Create service account (e.g. clickfix-chat). It needs no role.
  2. Open it → Keys → Add key → Create new key → JSON. The key file downloads to your computer.

If your organization's policy blocks service account key creation, your Cloud admin needs to allow it for this project. Don't share the key file by email or chat; upload it only to ClickFix, then delete it.

4. Create the channel in ClickFix

  1. Choose Channels → Add channel → Google Chat.
  2. Fill in the channel name, Google Cloud project number and Service account key (JSON). Paste the key or pick the file with Load from file.
  3. Click Connect. ClickFix checks the details with Google and shows the HTTP endpoint URL with a copy button. The URL also appears later in the channel settings.

The key is stored encrypted and never shown again.

5. Configure the Chat app

APIs & Services → Google Chat API → Configuration:

  • Build this Chat app as a Google Workspace add-on: leave unchecked.
  • Fill in App name, Avatar URL and Description.
  • Interactive features: on. Under Functionality, tick Receive 1:1 messages and Join spaces and group conversations.
  • Connection settings: choose HTTP endpoint URL and paste the URL from step 4.
  • Authentication Audience: Project Number.
  • Visibility: choose the people and groups who can use the app.

Click Save. The app becomes searchable in Google Chat within a few minutes.

6. Usage and picking rooms

  • Direct messages: anyone who finds the app in Google Chat and messages it lands in the inbox. Name and email come from Google.
  • Rooms: add the app to the room (room name → Apps & integrations → Add apps). Then in ClickFix open the channel's Settings and tick the room under Routed Google Chat rooms. You can also add a spaces/AAAA… space ID by hand.

Messages from rooms that aren't selected are not received. In rooms, Google only sends the app messages that @mention it. Each thread in a room is its own conversation, and your reply goes to the same thread.

Limits

Text only (up to 4096 characters). Files, cards and reactions are not supported.

Rotating the key

  1. Create a new JSON key on the same service account.
  2. Upload it to the Service account key field in the ClickFix channel settings and save. An empty field keeps the current key.
  3. Delete the old key in Google Cloud.

If you move to a different Cloud project, create a new Google Chat channel.

Troubleshooting

SymptomCause and fix
The app doesn't respond in ChatWrong HTTP endpoint URL, or Authentication Audience isn't "Project Number". The project number in ClickFix must match Cloud.
Error when connectingThe pasted JSON isn't a service account key, the key was deleted, or the project number isn't numeric.
Room messages don't arriveThe room isn't selected in the channel settings, or the app wasn't @mentioned.
Room list doesn't loadThe Chat API isn't enabled or the key is invalid. Add the space ID by hand.
